"Windows On The World" is the 8th song on American Music Club's 9th album, 2008’s The Golden Age. The song was about a party in New York that Mark Eitzel had been to for the band Jonathan Fire*Eater.[1] He elaborated further to The Georgia Straight, saying, "They’re always talking about 'the heroes’, you know? And I thought, 'The heroes? They’re people. They’re just normal, workaday people.' That was the real tragedy about it. All these religious fuckers think that they can kill, Christians and Muslims alike. I hate them all. God is not on your side; God doesn’t give a flying fuck. I despise it. But all I can do is write about the bar, and about being yet another asshole in yet another asshole’s bar.”.[2]
Lyrics
I said to my friend Kid, "I know I'm just a tourist but
It's your New York duty to turn my tourist frown upside down."
So he took me to a party for fire-eaters; we did drugs in the toilet
Yeah, we were so downtown
I said, "Will there be a band? God I hope not.
Isn't it beautiful, doesn't it feel like the end of the world?
I mean, you can already see the ruins start to grow
The end of the world's gonna be beautiful
Later on I said to Kid, "Hey look at me, look at me
I'm on the top of the world with a free beer"
He said, "Don't worry my dear, they'll let any trash in here"
At the windows on the world
At the windows on the world
At the windows on the world
At the windows on the world
I remember trying to bore the bored barmaid
I said, "You know babe from here you can see forever"
She said, "Yeah I know, I got it made, here's your fuckin' beer
I love that look, it's so Unabomber"
I said to Kid, "We'll build these beautiful tombs and then the dead will trap us inside"
He said, "Mark, if you're so goddamn smart, tell me why tourists always wanna get so high"
At the windows on the world
At the windows on the world
At the windows on the world
At the windows on the world
If I snap my fingers what will I get
If I snap my fingers what will I get
If I snap my fingers what will I get
That's right, anything I want
Anything I want
At the windows on the world
At the windows on the world
At the windows on the world
At the windows on the world
